9/11: Ten years on…

September 12th, 2011

It is hard to image that those images that are so etched on our minds happened a decade ago now. The scale of the events on that day still is unimaginable. The grief, as the family members read out the names of the dead at Ground Zero, is still fresh. The lives of millions of people in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan have equally been changed forever. Their grief is marked with the same tears and the same loss. Yet the response of the church to the unengaged Muslim peoples of the Middle East and south Asia has changed little and if at all, usually for the worse. For all the new books published on Islam, as friend or foe, there has been little appetite for churches to send of their best to bring the light and love of Christ to the peoples of the Muslim world who need to know that they have a Father in heaven who loves them and sent his one and only son to die for their sin and to take away their guilt. This is the year of the Lord’s favour: proclaiming good news to the poor, binding up the broken-hearted, proclaiming freedom for the captives, release from the darkness to Muslims who will seek God with all their heart.

Excellent New Book: ‘Reaching Muslims’

August 26th, 2011

There are many books today on Islam, on sharing your faith with Muslims, but Nick Chatrath’s book is a great starting point if you have an interest in knowing a bit more about how to relate in a significant way to your Muslim neighbour. In a very well written and easy to read style, Nick has provided us with an inspiring guide to understanding simple and effective ways to love your neighbour and to share your faith effectively. With excellent questions and helpful study guides, this book is an excellent one-stop introductory guide.

Reaching Muslims is published by Monarch Books priced £7.99 and is available at www.amazon.co.uk and in Kindle and ePub formats.

Hope for Syria?

August 23rd, 2011

As a resolution to the situation in Libya comes closer, the situation in Syria remains one of huge concern. The UN now confirms that the death toll has risen to over 2200, yet there appears to be no likelihood of concerted international action and certainly no military action to see the regime of Bashar al-Assad come to an end.

Syria is a key power broker in the region, making the situation all the more complicated. Instability there, if the regime falls may lead to even greater issues in the region. Saying ‘better the devil you know’, may work at a strategic political level, but it is not a great strategy for Christians to ignore the intolerable violence perpetrated by the state on its own citizens.

Pray for the historical churches in Syria, that the light of Christ may shine through them. Pray for those who have come to faith from a Muslim background who are seeking to live out their faith somewhere in-between the two main faith communities. Pray for the millions of Syrians who have access to Christian satellite broadcasts in their heart language in the privacy of their own homes, that they will seek out and find Jesus in the midst of this crisis that is gripping their nation.

Pray that just as the king of Nineveh repented before God, that Bashar al-Assad will repent of the violence of his regime before the living God and that God would bring a blessing of peace and reconciliation on his nation.
